Heritage Park Outdoor Classroom
Minneapolis, MN
In 2011, Blackstone Contractors was contracted by the City of Minneapolis—Community Planning and Economic Development, to construct an outdoor classroom adjacent Bethune Community School within Bethune Park. The classroom is nestled amid large existing trees and provides a shady respite for outdoor learning programs.
In coordination with SRF Consulting Group and the public artist, Craig David, Blackstone built cast-in-place radius seat walls, concrete pavement with decorative scoring and engraved and stained art imagery titles. Blackstone coordinated schedules with the public artist, under separate contract, during his installation of the mosaic tiles. With site access limitations and close proximity of large existing trees, Blackstone was able to complete the project with minimal site disturbance. The classroom is one of several public art installations within the Heritage Park Redevelopment area of Minneapolis’ Near Northside.
